# What Anvil Coder is not

Anvil Coder is not an autocompleter in the editor and not a chat assistant you ask questions. It takes an order as a whole — requirements plus guardrails — and delivers a Git repository. The difference lies not in the quality of the models, but in the unit in which work is done.

## Three ways of working

**Completion in the editor** — tools like GitHub Copilot start at the point where you are writing and suggest the next step. How far their scope reaches beyond that keeps changing; for this comparison only the way of working counts: the structure, the order and the decision about what gets built at all stay with the person at the editor.

**Conversation about the codebase** — tools like Cursor or Claude Code hold a dialogue about a project: you describe what should happen, the tool proposes changes, you accept them or not. That is powerful, and it stays bound to a dialogue: the unit is the change, not the order.

**Contract manufacturing** — Anvil Coder takes the order and works through it. Not typing faster, not answering better: building more at once, with gates in between. How much oversight you keep is something you configure per project — without a configured level, the order runs straight through.

## When which tool is the right one

For day-to-day work on an existing codebase, an editor tool is almost always the better choice — the path from thought to change is shorter, and you see every step.

Anvil Coder pays off where a *volume* of similar work is waiting: a new project from a requirements document, a backlog of tickets, a migration across many files. In other words, where the bottleneck is not the thinking but the carrying out.

The two do not exclude each other. The repository Anvil Coder delivers is an ordinary Git repository — the day-to-day work on it afterwards happens in the editor.

## What this means for the evaluation

The question is therefore not "which model writes better code". It is: **how large is the unit you can hand over to a system without losing control?** That is exactly what the phase gates and the guardrails are for — they make the handover larger without making it blind.
